Land claims progress

Alex Matlala

The national land claims commission will need five years to settle about 5000 claims still outstanding nationwide.

This is according to acting land claims commissioner Blessing Mphela. He was addressing the media on the progress made with the restitution process since 1994.

Of the 4949 claims still outstanding 1722 claims are in KwaZulu-Natal, 829 in Mpumalanga and 671 in Limpopo. The Western Cape and Eastern Cape have 595 and 552 outstanding claims respectively. The Northern Cape has 215 while North West has 213 outstanding claims. The Free State has 91 claims while Gauteng has almost settled all claims. Mphela said 74808 claims out of 79696 lodged had been settled which has benefited 289937 households.
