Cellphone footage showing a steamy kissing session between a teacher and pupil has surfaced at a school in KwaZulu-Natal.

The cellphone video also shows a female teacher and Grade 12 boy fondling each other in the classroom.

A pupil recorded the two with a cellphone through an open window.

Then the footage was circulated at the Wingen Heights Secondary School in Shallcross near Durban, attended by more than 500 pupils.

Yesterday Sowetan learnt that the teacher has resigned but the pupil remains at the school while the school makes plans to summon both of them to a disciplinary hearing.

Education spokesman Mbali Thusi said yesterday that the department couldn't take any action because it had not employed the teacher, who was hired by the school governing body.

"The school will have to conduct its own disciplinary hearing and submit recommendations to the department before we can make a decision," Thusi said.

This is not the first time a scandalous video has been made on school grounds in the province.

Earlier this year a video of pupils having sex in a toilet at the Tongaat Secondary School was also made public.

Asked what the department plans to do to curb such embarrassing incidents, Thusi said the department was doing its part by teaching pupils life orientation skills.

"Parents and communities should also do their part by encouraging pupils not to engage in sex and teaching them about the dangers of teenage pregnancies," Thusi said.

The KwaZulu-Natal parents' association yesterday condemned the incident.

Fared Rajack said it was disgusting that a teacher was caught in the act with a child she was supposed to have been protecting.
