The battle for the attractive first prize of R10 million in the 2008-2009 Absa Premiership kicks off in great earnest on Wednesday, August 27, and it promises to be a real scrap.

The stakes have been raised significantly and every team wants a piece of the pie. They have made their intentions clear by beefing up their squads.

One guaranteed winner will be the fans, who are likely to see exciting football.

The opening two games of the season will take place at night and will be live on television.

The matches are Ajax Cape Town against Maritzburg United at Athlone at 7.30pm and Bidvest Wits against Santos at Milpark at 8pm.

PSL general manager Ace Ncobo said the massive sponsorship deals and the introduction of the MTN8 would inject fresh life into the Premiership.

"We're looking for a better product, and that product is football on the pitch," he said. "We expect clubs to dish out good football and we hope to see the standard of the game going up."

Golden Arrows coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, whose side lost out a top eight spot last season, also predicted fireworks this term.

"The league itself is going to be very tough and exciting and seeing that the MTN 8 has come with new innovations and big bucks, we're going to fight hard to end up in the top eight or above.

"We're expecting very good football and it is not going to be easy for all the teams."

AmaZulu's PRO, Philani Mabaso said: "With the kind of money in the league and the introduction of the new competition that carries millions for the winner, the standard is bound to go up to another level."

The PSL has still to announce the full fixtures for the 2008-2009 season.
