As hordes of Cosatu marchers turned the Pretoria streets red yesterday, formal business suffered while informal traders made a killing.

Closed shops forced thirsty and hungry workers to buy from street vendors.

"Marchers are buying my food and I'm happy," said a vendor who did not want to be named.

Lucas Nkosi, who sells cigarettes, said with a smile: "I have sold six 20-packets of cigarettes in three hours."

There were many incidents but the one that stood out was when a group of teachers wearing Sadtu T-shirts sang unprintable songs about Minister of Education Naledi Pandor.

As toyi-toying marchers passed the Defence Force training centre in Visagie Street soldiers hummed along with marchers who were singing " lelizwe ngelama Komanisi " (this country belongs to communists).
