The shocking attack of Nokie du Toit, 37, happened on Monday as colleagues watched in horror.
Yesterday police spokesman Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said owner Sydney Daniell and three employees were feeding his four lions when "the male lion managed to get through the gates".
"He charged at the men. Daniell and his men ran towards his bakkie to escape the raging lion. Daniell got the vehicle started and tried to knock it away with the bumper but it pulled Du Toit off the back of the bakkie.
"The men at the back of the bakkie threw meat at the lion so he would let go of Du Toit.
"Their plan worked and while the lion was busy with the meat, the men loaded Du Toit onto the bakkie," Naidu said.
Daniell shot the lion dead and rushed the victim, who had been bitten on his arms and legs, to the Sunday's River Valley Hospital.
He died an hour later, apparently from loss of blood.
Du Toit's death is the latest in several deaths linked to the controversial big cat breeding and hunting sector, where lions are bred to be shot. - The Herald
