A man is under police guard in hospital after he was assaulted by a mob who accused him of slitting the throat of his live-in lover.
The man is said to have fought with Sophie Marobane, 30, after she refused to hand over maintenance money she received from her previous boyfriend.
The woman and her previous lover have a six-year-old son. Marobane was found in an open veld were she was dumped after being killed.
Police said Marobane was stabbed with a sharp object while she was in her bed in her shack at the Winnie Mandela informal settlement in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.
They said her body was found by a passer-by at about 11am on Sunday.
"We found blood in the shack," police spokesman Manyadza Ralidzivha said.
A neighbour said Marobane received R375 a month from her ex-boyfriend to maintain their son.
A neighbour who did not want to be named said "the two fought every month end when the money was paid to the woman".
