A speeding driver who killed a four-year-old Soweto girl and injured two sangomas in a horror crash on Sunday has been placed under police guard in hospital.
Inspector Kay Makhubela said the man was found trapped inside the car at the scene and was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
"We could not detain him in the holding cells. He was seriously injured and was taken to Tshepo-Themba Hospital," he said.
Police could not confirm whether the man was under the influence of alcohol when he drove over Lesego Diale in Zola.
"Our investigations will reveal whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol," he said.
Makhubela said police would only act against the driver as soon as he is discharged from hospital.
He said the man would face charges of culpable homicide and malicious damage to property.
