The fate of the National Prosecuting Authority's special investigations unit - commonly known as the Scorpions - will be discussed in Parliament today.
The government has introduced the General Laws Amendment Bill, which makes provision for the Scorpions to be disbanded. This follows a resolution passed at the ANC conference last year that the unit be disbanded and that a new crime fighting unit be established.
The disbanding of the Scorpions has drawn objections from opposition parties. Parliament has received more than 55000 e-mail petitions, 24000 handwritten signatures, about 18000 SMSes and 100 written submissions against the dissolution of the Scorpions.
