The man accused of killing Phelisa Mkhuma, the sister of Pretoria News editor Zingisa Mkhuma, yesterday withdrew his application for bail.
Joseph Tefo Khoza appeared in the Protea magistrate's court in Soweto where a ruling on his bail application was to be made.
He spoke through his lawyer, Owen Khumalo, requesting that the court withdraw the application because he feared for his safety if released.
Magistrate W Ferrerrie later asked Khoza if what his lawyer had told the court was true. He softly said "yes", nodding.
Ferrerrie granted the request.
Khoza is accused of killing Mkhuma on June 16. Her body was found in the veld wrapped in a blanket near New Canada railway station, outside Soweto. She had a bullet wound in the chest.
Ferrerrie told Khoza to appear in the same court again on September 10 to get an indictment from the high court, where the trial would be heard.
