Three men suspected of being involved in ATM bombings appeared in the Johannesburg magistrate's court yesterday.

Sibusiso Vilakazi, 27, Stephen Ndadlana, 37, and Lucky Tyesi, 33, are facing several charges of attempted murder, theft, malicious damage to property and contravening the Explosives Act.

Their case was postponed to August 6 to allow them a chance to get legal representation.

They were arrested with two other people, including a woman, in Soweto at the weekend by the organised crime unit.

Thirteen commercial explosives, an AK-47 rifle, a shotgun and a 9mm pistol with live rounds of ammunition were found during the arrest.

The suspects are linked to an attack on police officers during an ATM bombing at a Sasol garage in Mofolo, Soweto, last week Thursday.

A police vehicle was patrolling a few kilometres from where the explosion took place.

As the police officers raced to the scene, the suspects opened fire on them.

A police reservist, Inspector Joyce Mofokeng, and her colleague, Inspector Mandla Motaung, were injured during the shooting. Mofokeng was shot in the legs and face.
