The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and a displaced man, Mahammud Mahamed Hirsi, have filed an urgent application in the Cape high court aimed at forcing the City of Cape Town and Western Cape provincial government to make immediate improvements to conditions at the city's camps for displaced people.
TAC and Hirsi, a Somali citizen who has been living in South Africa for the past 10 years, say government must be compelled to immediately implement "bare minimum standards of relief" in Cape Town's camps for displaced people.
In May this year 20000 people were displaced in one weekend of xenophobic violence in Western Cape. They fled to churches, police stations and community halls.
Cape Town Mayor Helen Zille, pictured, said the halls were needed for "weddings and other functions" and displaced people were moved to camps.
The city's offi.cials now say the problems of poor food, leaking tents and a lack of transport for displaced schoolchildren are the responsibilities of the provincial government.
The case will be heard on Tuesday
