A protest march against an alleged preferential employment policy turned ugly in Greytown in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands yesterday.

Thousands of angry Nhlakahle township residents marched on the offices of the IFP-led Umvoti municipality.

The marchers, allegedly all ANC supporters, barricaded streets, which led to a confrontation with the police. The police were pelted with stones and retaliated with rubber bullets.

Residents accused the municipality of employing only card-carrying IFP members and outsiders. Organiser Tony Malunga said they had applied to protest but did not get any response.
