Pretoria high court judge Nkola Motata appeared so drunk that he misspelt Transvaal in the note he gave to Richard Baird on the night of the accident.

The handwritten note, which was handed in as exhibit E in the Johannesburg magistrate's court yesterday, contained Motata's name, ID number and cellphone number.

Baird told the court that he could not make sense of some of the words because they were illegible.

Motata's drunken driving and defeating the ends of justice charges arose from an incident in which he allegedly crashed his vehicle into the wall of Baird's Hurlingham, Johannesburg, home in January last year.

During cross-examination Baird disputed evidence given by the two metro police about the time of their arrival and the arrest of Motata, pictured.

"There is no room for mistakes in my cellphone. It is my watch. I use it to take kids to school and for meetings," he said.

A female officer had testified that she arrived at the scene after 2am.
