Young and aspiring athletes from all over Limpopo will gather at Hans Merensky High School for the provincial cross-country championships on Saturday, starting at 8am.

The event is organised by Limpopo School Sports Coordinating Committee (LSSCC) as part of their preparations for the national championships scheduled for September 24 to 25 at the University of Free State.

More than 540 athletes aged between 9 and 19 will fight for places in the provincial team.

"We are calling on all districts to bring the athletes' proper documentation to ensure that the championships run smoothly. We further urge all the athletes to put on correct athletics attire," Jimmy "JJ" Ngobeni, LSSCC's spokesman, told Sowetan yesterday.

"Our wish is to have more parents who will give their children moral support, something they desperately need.

"Even members of the community are encouraged to attend this event as entrance is free."

Limpopo came fifth at the national championships in 2006, and Ngobeni made a commitment that this year they will go for a position in the top three.

"Our confidence is raised by the high standard displayed by athletes from Senwabarwana and Sekhukhune during the district championships," Ngobeni said.
