Mama Angel paid an emergency visit to the Family Worship Hospice at Westbury, near Coronation Hospital, in Johannesburg.
The hospice was founded by Pastor Errol Jacobs of the Family Worship Centre. It caters for seriously ill patients suffering from HIV-Aids-related illnesses. It accommodates 24 patients and terminally ill patients. It is entirely dependent on donations.
Patients are offered counselling on the disease, a refuge for those whose families have turned their backs on them and a sense of belonging and hope.
Sowetan invited its readers to send messages of condolence after the death of Vuyo Mokoena, a popular gospel singer who died from a brain tumour on May 22.
The money generated from the SMSes was augmented by Mama Angel's budget.
Lorraine Mofokeng, Sowetan's marketing manager, said: "We thought this was an ideal way of generating money for charity.
"We are happy that our readers helped us raise a little money for the hospice.
"We thank the readers for their contribution and for making a difference in the lives of people in need.
"It is indeed a gesture in keeping with the spirit of ubuntu, a silver lining," Mofokeng said.
Virginia Rabaji, the sister in charge of the hospice, said they needed slippers and socks because their patients felt the cold all year round. She said some patients preferred slippers and socks because they had difficulty walking.
"We are very relieved and thankful for the groceries which came at just the right moment," Rabaji said.
"We thank Sowetan for always keeping an eye on us. We are happy that we participated in honouring the late Vuyo Mokoena."
The hospice has acquired new premises next door to a former shopping centre, and will be moving soon.
