Lucia Mthiyane, axed as e.tv soapie Rhythm City character Rachel, is cele- brating after landing another job.
The Umlazi-born actress has landed a major role in Duma Ndlovu's play, The Game, which opens at the Playhouse in Durban this Thursday.
The Game will run until August 10 as part of the Women's Arts Festival in the coastal town.
Mthiyane, who hails from KwaZulu-Natal, is a veteran of stage and TV and is known for her artistic exploits in musicals, particularly the long-running Girl Talk, a Richard Loring musical that quenched the thirst of so many at the Sound Stage Theatre in Midrand for years before it was closed down recently.
When she spoke to Sowetan yesterday amid rehearsals, Mthiyane sounded enthusiastic about her new role and the new direction in her artistic exploits.
"I actually got the role when I was still with Rhythm City. For some reason, God always has a plan for me. I always get something to do. As far as I am concerned it is important to strike a balance between acting on stage and on TV," Mthiyane said.
"Maybe I will do one more stage play before considering going back to TV. Right now I am thinking about an offer to play a role in another production after The Game."
In The Game Mthiyane plays the role of Margaret Mzizi, one of the women convicts serving 15 years behind bars.
"The challenge is quite huge because I have never been convicted and jailed in my life. So I had to do a lot of research in order to play the character well."
Mthiyane said she was thrilled to be performing at the Playhouse after so many years of working in Johannesburg.
"It feels so nice to be working in my home town after so many years," the former schoolteacher said.
