Seven people were killed in several accidents around Johannesburg at the weekend.

In Soweto a gruesome accident left three family members and another man dead when two vehicles collided head-on.

Johannesburg metro police spokesman Edna Mamonyane said a Ford Fiesta was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it collided with an oncoming bakkie.

"Three people travelling in the Ford Fiesta and the driver of the bakkie were killed instantly. The accident happened at 4.56am near Nancefield hostel. A case of culpable homicide has been opened," Mamonyane said.

In another accident in Soweto, this time in Zola, a female passenger died when the car she was travelling in overturned and hit a house.

She was certified dead by the paramedics.

Mamonyane said another case of culpable homicide was opened.

On Saturday, two people died in the early hours when their cars collided on the N14 highway towards Diepsloot.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesman Nana Radebe said the happened just before 3am.

"A blue Opel Corsa collided with a white Opel Astra. Both drivers died at the scene. It is alleged that one of the drivers was driving in the wrong lane," said Radebe.

Sapa reports that a driver was killed and his passenger seriously injured when their car collided with a bakkie in Kimberly, Northern Cape yesterday.

Spokesman Captain Tshepo Mofokeng said the accident occurred in Municipal Road on Friday.

"The driver of the other sedan died on the scene. His female passenger was rushed to hospital in a serious condition."

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
