Thousands of athletes from South Africa and neighbouring countries will invade the Limpopo mining town of Phalaborwa tomorrow to sweat in pursuit of glory in the Foskor Half-Marathon.
The event, which starts at the Foskor Community Centre at 2pm, carries a total prize of R207100.
Winners in both the men's and women's categories will pocket R21100.
Male athletes who break Ezael Thlobo's 1997 record of 1hr:01min:55secs will get an additional R21 100.
Top Zimbabwean runner Portipher Dombojena was two minutes and 28 seconds short of matching Thlobo's record when he won the race last year.
Elana Meyer's women's record of 1:12:19, which she set in 1999, still stands after Beta Naigambo failed to break it last year. The Namibian runner won the race in a time of 1:16:15.
The two champions will be available to defend their titles.
But the organisers could not immediately confirm the names of other athletes who will compete in the race.
Participants had better prepare themselves thoroughly because it is not going to be easy in the Phalaborwa heat.
The race is among the popular events in southern Africa and people, young and old, from Phalaborwa and Namakgale township always come out in numbers to support the athletes.
Olympics gold medallist Josiah Thungwane, Xolile Yawa and Meyer are among many prominent athletes who have taken part in the celebrated event in the past.
