MosewaMosa steals the show

Wednesday marked the start of the 2009 Joburg Fashion Week with an exciting feeling of anticipation at the glittering event that ends tomorrow.

A few trends were apparent for the summer collection: small, strapless dresses, women's wear with a masculine twist, high-waisted skirts, dresses and pants.

Charcoal, yellow, brown, purple, rust orange, black and white dominated on the Montecasino Piazza catwalk, as did fur accents. It was a return to basics with the mastery of couture techniques clearly evident.

The show kicked off with stirring designs by Pink Ant, Getty, MosewaMosa, Heni Este-Hijzen, Siphakeme Ndlovu, Colette Palin, Abigail Keats and Frans Kies. But it was MosewaMosa who stole the show with a deeply wearable, feminine collection. She played with sweeping, architectural tailoring as she gave her lily-white and airy clothes a sophisticated edge.

Abigail Keats also earned tons of applause with designs that were characterised by exquisite tailoring and feminine looks.

Heni Este-Hijzen sent gothic creations down the runway with touches of hat feathers. Siphakeme Ndlovu and Grans Kies brightened the night with fresh and beautiful colours.

Today will see heavyweights like Vukani Creations, Mzansi Designers, Machere Fundudzi and David Tlale strutting their stuff.

The show will close tomorrow with Miss A Couture, Thesis, Thula Sindi, Philosophy and Sungodess.

The fashion shows start at 6pm.
