Music lovers will be treated to a different kind of rhythm when the third yearly South African National Marimba Festival commences this month.

The two-day festival, hosted by St Dominic's School, will be held in Boksburg on Saturday and Sunday.

Spokesman Vanessa Perumal said the festival promises to outstrip the success of its predecessors with a programme that provides the perfect combination of skill and entertainment.

"The different genres of music played at the festival give a clear indication, not only of South Africa's musical diversity, but also of the versatility and adaptability of the marimba as a musical vehicle."

The competition is divided into three categories: the junior school competition, high school and open category.

During the festival, marimbas of all shapes and sizes as well as marimba players of all shapes and sizes come together to make music.
