Shona Khona - the nation-building partnership between Reckitt Benckiser, Metro Cash & Carry, the SABC, Sowetan, Mamelodi Sundowns, AIG, Imperial Europcar and ForwardZone - is helping boys and girls aged between 10 and 16 to realise their soccer dreams.
More than 40 hopefuls will vie for six places under the watchful eyes of talent scouts who include Nobel Maja, Mandla Mazibuko, James Mabena and Stan Whiting at the Safa and Transnet Foundation Sports School of Excellence in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng, from today.
The six youngsters will do their best to impress with their kicking, passing, positioning, teamwork and thinking skills to be in the same position as one lucky lad - Tyroane Sandows.
Sandows, a 2006 Shona Khona recruit, is currently in Brazil. He is in the junior team of the famous Sao Paulo FC in Sao Paulo, where he has signed a three-year contract and is due to play for the team for the next three years or until he is 15 years old.
At the end of that term, Sandows will be re-evaluated to join the senior section of the academy. This means he will be eligible to start the process of becoming a professional soccer player in accordance with Fifa's guidelines. - Victor Mecoamere and Thandukwazi Gcabashe
