"Respect the elderly. They will make good ancestors," was ANC president Jacob Zuma's message to the youth of Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, yesterday.
Zuma was speaking at a function at which the Gift of the Givers Foundation - an international non-governmental organisation - handed out hundreds of blankets to pensioners in the township.
Zuma thanked the foundation's Imtiaz Sooliman who organised the event. He urged local businessmen to care for the needy.
"I will also contribute if I have money," Zuma said.
He later joined a local group in Zulu traditional dancing.
Sooliman said the event was part of the foundation's programme to respond to the plight of the needy. He said they had invited Zuma because he was aware of their humanitarian work.
"Zuma is very aware of our work," Sooliman said. "We felt it was ideal to invite him. On Monday we were in Soweto. We have two clinics here in Tembisa. We will continue to do our humanitarian work all over our country." - Vusi Ndlovu
