Bushbuckridge police are investigating an ATM bombing that happened at a local shopping centre in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police yesterday confirmed that the explosion happened at the old Bushbuckridge shopping complex.

Police spokesman Dimpho Nkosi said no one had been arrested.

However, they were optimistic that they would have a breakthrough soon.

She said police found a cable next to the damaged ATM when they arrived minutes after the blast.

The security guards at the scene said they only heard a loud bang at about 3:3am, Nkosi said.

They did not see anyone or any vehicle leave the scene.

"Our investigations are continuing. We are optimistic that an arrest or arrests will be made soon as we are working round the clock in a bid to bring the perpetrator or perpetrators to book," said Nkosi.

She said that no money was taken from the damaged ATM.

Nkosi asked members of the community who had any information that could possibly help to call the nearest police station.

"Your information can help us to apprehend the culprits. We will treat any information we receive with the necessary confidence," said Nkosi.

ATM bombings have become common in Mpumalanga's Lowveld area since the beginning of the year. Thugs have bombed ATMs twice in KaNyamazane, once in Masoyi, twice in Nelspruit and once in Malelane.

Nkosi, however, refused to divulge the exact number of bombings committed in the province since the beginning of this year.
