A Mpumalanga teacher appeared briefly in the Mhala magistrate's court in Thulamahashe yesterday in connection with the alleged murder of his girlfriend.
Bedwell Hlungwane, 44, has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder and perjury relating to a previous statement he had made to the Acornhoek police.
He allegedly fetched his girlfriend, Endurance Ndlovu, 22, from Cottondale, near Acornhoek, where she lived, on February 26.
He allegedly later called her sister, Fortunate, to accompany him to Tintswalo Hospital because "a car had knocked down" Endurance Ndlovu.
In his statement to the police, Hlungwane said Endurance Ndlovu had run in front of an oncoming car that knocked her down before speeding away.
He said he was not able to take down the car's registration numbers because he was still in a state of shock.
The court postponed the matter to August 5. - Riot Hlatshwayo
