A Soweto mother and her nine-year-old daughter are struggling to survive because, after five years of trying, the Department of Home Affairs has still not issued her with an identity document to enable her to look for employment.
Takalani Olga Matsimbi, 26, of Zone 5 Meadowlands, says the department's incompetence is not only ruining her life but also that of her child Mpho.
"I cannot find work to support my daughter because I do not have an ID," Matsimbi says. "My daughter cannot apply for a birth certificate and child support grant because she needs my ID."
She says she first applied for an ID in 2003 in Johannesburg.
When she went to collect it she was told that her particulars could not be found.
She applied for the second time at the Orlando West offices but was again later told that her particulars were not on their records.
On the third occasion she applied in Roodepoort but a year later nothing had happened.
Last year she went back to Orlando West to apply for the fourth time. She alleges that she is still waiting.
Department of Home Affairs spokesman Mantshele Tau says Matsimbi's matter is being investigated.
