Coenie Bester from Mpumalanga is the highest ranked player selected for the South African Golf Association (Saga) President's Team to play in the inaugural SADC Amateur Open Championship at the Lusaka Golf Club in Zambia on August 2 and 3.
"The team represents some of our talented young players who will be exposed to international competition for the first time," said Neale Kunhardt, president of Saga who will also be the team manager.
Bester is ranked tenth on the Saga player rankings, one ahead of Jake Redman, who was also selected. He plays out at Fancourt,
Three members of the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation will experience international competition for the first time.
They are 20year-old Calvin Coelho from KwaZulu-Natal, 19-year-old Keenan Davidse from Boland and 19-year-old Trevor Mahoney (Boland).
Kunhardt said this new African event on the international calendar is likely to be a yearly competition hosted in the country in which the chairman of the South African Development Community resides.
The format of the competition is similar to the annual Zone VI tournament.
On the first day teams will play foursomes in the morning and then betterball in the afternoon.
On the second, and final day, all teams play singles.
