A Naledi, Soweto, man had a rude awakening on Saturday when police pounced while he was sleeping and arrested him for taking part in the gang-rape of an elderly woman.

The 27-year-old was arrested at 3am.

"We found him asleep and he led us to the other two suspects and we arrested them," said Jabulani police spokesman Inspector Kay Makhubela.

He said the trio had gang-raped a 61-year- old Naledi woman last year.

The other two men are aged 31 and 36.

"The investigations had been ongoing since the rape but when we were about to arrest them they disappeared," he said.

"When they resurfaced recently [the grandmother] alerted the police and that is how we arrested them," Makhubela said.

The men will appear in the Protea magistrate's court today.
