The eThekwini municipality says the renaming of Mangosuthu Highway to Griffiths Mxenge is still on despite protests.
"I don't know why people are putting pressure on us to put new signs for this street when there are 101 streets that need to be renamed," said Zandile Gumede, the chairman of the council's Masakhane committee.
Gumede said her committee was given three months to put up the new street signs.
"Only once this period has elapsed can people start questioning us. We have not backed off and are certainly not going to back off. The street has been renamed, finishand klaar," Gumede said.
Meanwhile, late freedom fighter and bomber Andrew Zondo's ghost continues to haunt those who despise him. When the council announced its intention to rename Kingsway Road in Amanzimtoti after Zondo, local residents, including DA supporters, complained. They threatened to pull down the new street sign, but the street was ultimately renamed.
Today, Lovu Primary School will officially be renamed after Zondo.
"Our dream of renaming the school after our hero has materialised.
"Parents submitted a number of names. It was decided that it was befitting to name the school after Zondo," said Fisani Luthuli, a member of the school's governing body (SGB).
She said in a reconciliatory move, the SGB had also decided to name a crèche after one of Zondo's victims, two-year-old Willem van Wyk.
