Nasty discharge has me worried

I went to a doctor because I was suffering from a very uncomfortable discharge.

I went to a doctor because I was suffering from a very uncomfortable discharge.

The doctor said that it was a yeast infection and gave me medication. I took the medication and was fine for a while, but then it started again. What is this and why is it happening to me again?

JL, Johannesburg

A vaginal yeast infection is a condition many women suffer from.

In the vagina there is fungus called candida. A yeast infection occurs when there is too much candida. It can be caused by diabetes, pregnancy, antibiotics or birth control pills.

Yeast grows if blood sugar is too high. Tight clothing, feminine hygiene products and tampons can also be a cause.

You can buy over-the-counter medications, but it would be wise to return to your doctor.
