Long may he shimmy

Congratulations on your 90th, Tata, you made us proud and still do every day of your life.

Congratulations on your 90th, Tata, you made us proud and still do every day of your life.

Surely that's what distinguishes Madiba from all other statesmen of our day.

He inspires not only by what he says but also by what he does, what he did and, importantly for our nation, by what we believe he will still do.

Mandela has the common touch and we all wish we could be like him.

He won his moral stature leading by example.

Only the most abstruse pointy-headed political types with no life of their own deign to quibble about his achievements. The rest of us know he is human, and therefore fallible. Despite his sometimes questionable judgment in shirts, we remain in awe of the great uniter.

Yes, he led an armed struggle for a just cause but can anyone even think of another human who has done as much for world peace - and peace in our own land?

He broke every stereotype of an African leader and continues to speak the truth to power, even within his own beloved ANC, now overtaken by paranoia and an inflated sense of leaders' importance.

All he needs is his self-deprecating trademark smile, laugh, shimmy and shake to restore our confidence and set us back on the road to our destiny.

And, Tata, long may you continue to do so.
