Four primary school teachers died when their vehicle collided with a truck in Mpumalanga on Wednesday afternoon.

The teachers from Berbice Primary School in Mahamba, near Piet Retief, were on their way to Pongola in KwaZulu-Natal when the accident happened at 5pm.

Mahamba police spokesman Constable Eric Sibisi said the teachers' vehicle had just overtaken a truck when it allegedly collided head-on with another truck coming from the opposite direction.

"We are investigating the circumstances that led to this horrific accident and have opened four cases of culpable homicide," said Sibisi.

The victims were identified as Nombulelo Vilakazi, 26, Glory Sithole, 30, and Vutsulu Morris, 30. The driver of the vehicle was only identified as Ms Konde, in her late 30s.

The Mpumalanga provincial education department confirmed that Berbice school was manned by eight teachers, four of whom died in the accident.

"Berbice Primary School had eight teachers, four of whom are now deceased," said Mpumalanga education spokesman, Jasper Zwane.

"The school has a total of 231 pupils."

He said the department sent its condolences to the families of the victims. He added that it had sent officials to visit the families.

"The Mpumalanga department of education has received with shock the sad news of the untimely death of the four teachers," said Zwane.
