In Parliament the DA has questioned Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula on what is being done to combat the increase in ATM bombings - there have been more than 294 since January.
This massive increase highlights the need for these crimes to be treated as a national emergency, and the DA has proposed that they be investigated by a dedicated unit within the SAPS.
The modus operandi shows that thee bombings are generally carried out by highly organised groups, armed with assault rifles and explosives.
This raises the concern that members of the SAPS or SANDF are possibly involved.
The police often seem unable to respond quickly to changes in criminal activity. This is the legacy of Jackie Selebi's disbanding of most of the SAPS' specialised units.
Though the increase in ATM bombings might be the direct result of the police's success in combating cash-in-transit heists, this does not absolve them from dealing with this new trend.
It is only by pooling skills, expertise and resources that the SAPS will ever be able to respond adequately.
