The relationship between the SABC and pay channel Multi-Choice has come to an abrupt end.
This was after the parties failed to agree on terms to continue broadcasting SABC Africa on DStv.
The contract expired in March, but the Africa Channel continued to be aired while talks continued.
"The idea was to extend the contract, but negotiations did not yield favourable results and it was decided to discontinue the broadcast," said SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago.
Rival news channels such as e.tv's 24-hour news channel and CNBC Africa have lured droves of skilled staff from the public broadcaster. But the brain drain did not worry Kganyago, who insisted staff would remain at SABC Africa "as they would play an instrumental role in the new digital service that was under way".
He said the SABC would switch to high-definition digital terrestrial television from November 1.
