Makgoba owes amaZulu apology

The recent utterances of Professor Malegapuru Makgoba cannot go unchallenged.

The recent utterances of Professor Malegapuru Makgoba cannot go unchallenged.

In his support for Jacob Zuma, he labels President Thabo Mbeki a dictator, saying he is no different from Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, Mobutu Sese Seko and amaZulu King Shaka.

Well, Mbeki never conducted a divisive and rowdy campaign in his bid to be re-elected as last year.

He never encouraged a militia to assault Zuma supporters or stole money from state coffers.

Instead, he was the victim of Zuma supporters' unruly behaviour and accepted defeat in Polokwane.

He was heckled while delivering a speech at the reburial of Moses Mabhida in Pietermaritzburg and during a visit by the Indian prime minister.

Zuma supporters have also called Mbeki and his mother unprintable names.

Makgoba is just the latest person in a race in which whoever spews the most bile against Mbeki is hailed as a hero by Zuma supporters.

He does not back his claims with facts. What is also worrying is Makgoba's abuse of King Shaka.

It is Makg ba's democratic right to praise Zuma but it should not be at the expense of Mbeki and our beloved king. He owes the amaZulu nation an apology.
