CNN International, broadcasting on Dstv's channel 401, will come to the legend's birthday celebration when it hosts a special broadcast entitled Mandela At 90. The programme airs on Saturday, July 19, at 8am, 4pm and 9pm as well as on Sunday, July 20, at 8am.
The 60-minute documentary will explore the extraordinary life of the man who led South Africa out of apartheid and rose to become one of the world's best-known and loved leaders and statesmen.
CNN's South Africa correspondent Robyn Curnow, who covered Mandela's inaugration 10 years ago, presents a special hour-long documentary which includes rare and candid interviews with Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, and his grandchildren. CNN also has an exclusive look inside the pages of the family's photo albums. Curnow also speaks to Mandela's friends and Robben Island inmates Mac Maharaj and Ahmed Kathrada, his lawyer and close friend George Bizos and his former bodyguard Rory Steyn. World and local leaders, including Kofi Annan, Jacob Zuma and Wangari Mathai, also share anecdotes and memories of this extraordinary man, known to many as Madiba.
Insightful and informative, the programme examines Mandela's incredible life, evaluating, among other things, his legacy, influence and global significance.
