The future looks brighter for Golden Gloves development fighters Warren "The Warrior" Joubert, Hekkie "Hexecutioner" Budler, Jarred Lovett, Thomas Oosthuizen, Ashley Dlamini and Isaac Chilembe.
Their promoter Rodney Berman, sponsors Gree Air Conditioners and Emperors Palace staged a tournament on Tuesday night at the Theatre of Marcellus with the sole purpose of determining who to back in the future.
These youngsters, who are described by Golden Gloves fight publicist Terry Pettifer as his company's Golden Class of 2008, were impressive in their assignments.
Berman, Bereng Kholoane and Bob Yearham were at the ringside throughout their action-packed tournament, which gave them a clearer idea of what they have in their hands.
Topping their star-studded lineup was the vastly underrated Joubert, who stopped Joe Modise in the fifth round of their catchweight bout, which was scheduled for eight rounds.
Joubert, fighting under Nick Durandt, added a sixth stoppage win from nine victories against a draw.
Earlier on Budler registered a hard-earned points win over six rounds against the never-say-die Ronald Parks in the junior flyweight division. Budler, who is trained by Colin Nathan, is undefeated after eight fights.
Budler's stablemate "The Storm" Lovett swept Ben Moakamela away in less then two minutes into the first round of their four-round heavyweight bout. It was Lovett's fourth win from as many fights.
Meanwhile, "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen blew Takalani Maluleke away in three rounds of their super middleweight fight that was scheduled for four. It was Ooshuizen's second win.
Dlamini made a positive entry to the professional ranks by outpointing Vuyani Dosi over four rounds in a junior featherweight clash.
But the star of the night was Chilembe. This 20-year-old Malawian, who fights out of Durandt's stable, poleaxed Zimbabwean Chamumorwa Gonorende in three rounds.
The latter hit the canvass face first, as Chilembe registered his 18th win against one defeat.
Mongezi Ndzamela upset the applecart when he stopped the much vaunted Zakhele Thembe in two rounds of their heavyweight fight. An average blow to the face sent Thembe down as if he had been shot.
He tried to get up but his legs were like those of a newborn calf, and that prompted referee Tony Nyangiwe to intervene.
