Judges are public servants whose role it is to uphold the rule of law and the dignity of our courts.
They also have to ensure transparency in the administration of the law.
After so much had been publicly laid bare in the row between Cape Judge President John Hlophe and two constitutional court judges, it is surprising that views are now being sought by the Judicial Services Council on whether the inquiry should be open to the public or not.
There are complaints that Hlophe tried to influence the two judges to rule in favour of ANC president Jacob Zuma in his pending court cases.
The claims and counterallegations must be tested in the open so that justice can be seen to be done.
