A top Mpumalanga politician faces charges of attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl on Monday night.

The official is attached to the Mbombela municipality, allegedly attempted to rape the girl in her sister's flat when she was away.

It is said to have been his second attempt at raping the girl in two weeks.

The official yesterday refused to comment when Sowetan contacted him about the allegations.

The victim's sister, who cannot be named to protect her, said she had just returned from her friend's place when her little sister told her about her ordeal.

"She said 'please promise not to shout at me after I have told you what happened while you were away'," she said.

"She then showed me a R100 note, which she said he gave her to buy her silence."

The sister said she became his friend when he started going out with a friend of hers.

"Though he and my friend have separated we maintained our friendship and he visits us when he feels like it," she said.

"My little sister told me last week that he tried to force himself on her but I didn't take her seriously.

"I feel so guilty for leaving her alone the first time it happened."

She said the girl was taken to hospital for a checkup and it was found that there had been no penetration.

Police spokesman Dawie Pretorius confirmed that a case of attempted rape was being investigated.

The ANC in Mpumalanga could not comment, saying the matter was purely a criminal one.

"But if the allegations are true action will be taken against him," said the ANC's Lucas Mello.
