Baby Itumeleng Bopape is only a month old but he is already fatherless after an alleged drunk driver ran over his father and five other people at the weekend.
This happened a few hours before the family could eat a cake to celebrate the baby's one month birthday.
The baby is now faced with the prospect of being raised by a single parent. Her unemployed mother lost a boyfriend in the accident on Sunday morning.
The accident happened while Peter Legodi, a traffic officer in Polokwane, was on duty at about 2am.
Legodi, 39, had promised his family a cake to celebrate his son's birthday the night before he left them in Seshego, outside Polokwane, for work.
Little did his mother know that they were seeing him alive for the last time. He was on duty on a road between Polokwane and Mokopane when he stopped a car with four occupants.
While he was waiting for the driver to show him his driver's licence another speeding car hit him and the car he had stopped. He died instantly.
The occupants of the car Legodi had stopped also died on the scene.
The driver, Alfred Rampola, a Mokopane businessman who was travelling in a luxury Chrysler Hemi, was allegedly drunk. He was released on R1 000 bail.
Polokwane police spokesman Inspector Lesiba Ramoshaba said yesterday Rampola, 59, was charged with culpable homicide and his case had been postponed to November 27 to allow for further police investigations.
