Florence Mzaca, a 81-year-old pensioner living in Zola, Soweto, is ecstatic about the brightly painted structure in her backyard.
That backyard behind her four-roomed house used to have two shacks, one for her son and the other for her two daughters.
The shacks have been replaced by a two-roomed house with a shower and a toilet. An innovative technology using polystyrene was used to build it.
The polystyrene walls are plastered on both sides and reinforced with steel rods.
The project is the latest initiative by the Gauteng housing department to eradicate backyard shacks through the 20 Prioritised Townships Programme in the province. The houses are free.
The earmarked townships include Soshanguve and Mamelodi in Pretoria, Orlando and Zola in Soweto, Duduza, Tsakane, KwaThema, Katlehong and Tembisa in Ekurhuleni.
Each house costs R43000 to build and a total of 500 are being erected in Zola.
