This book is about the life of Thami Mnyele, an artist and ANC member born in Alexandra township in Johannesburg. The author captures the atmosphere of Alexandra, the lifestyle of its people and looks at the lives of other people from Alex who later became prominent.
Mnyele's life was shaped by events that happened before he was born or while he was young. The book looks at how these events changed his life and that of black people in South Africa.
The detailed information is well constructed to fit in with the stages of Mnyele's life and how it influenced it but the author tends to focus too much on other people.
The author paints a beautiful description of the paintings drawn by Mnyele and other artists. She captures moments such as when Mnyele asked a young artist: "If you walk in the street with your girlfriend and she is stabbed by a thug, how would you express your strong feeling in art? Would you show the hand raised or the woman lying on the ground?" This question showed how passionate Mnyele was about art in life.
In his life art came before everything and this will give readers a greater understanding of art.
This book is a both entertaining and educational. By reading it you will be exposed to the history of art and revolution in South Africa
