SA bags three medals

YDGOSZCZ, Poland - South Africa's medal tally rose to three on the penultimate day of the 12th World Junior Athletics Championships here on Saturday.

The men's 4x100m relay team finished third in the final with a time of 39,70 sec. Earlier in the week Wilhelm van der Vyver (100m) and Andre Olivier (800m) won silver and bronze medals respectively in their events. Van der Vyver, the anchor man in the relay, thus won his second medal.

His teammates were Johannes Mosala, Roscoe Engel and Patrick Vosloo.

The same foursome were also responsible for two new SA record runs of 40,16sec in Harare a month ago and 39,59sec in Friday's heat.

Cheyne Rahme, 17, SA youth record-holder in the pole vault, finished 11th in the final after failing to clear the bar at 5,20m. The SA men's 4x400m relay quartet, consisting of the team's 400m hurdlers and 800m runners, were eliminated after finishing seventh in their semifinal with a time of 3min 12,09sec. - Sapa
