nyandoro scoops top award

Esrom Nyandoro picked up a R100000 cheque last Wednesday evening after getting the nod as Mamelodi Sundowns' player of the season for the second time at a chaotic end-of-the-season awards ceremony in Johannesburg.

It was a sad and shambolic affair, as large numbers of fans almost stormed the venue - and were eventually let in - before they proceeded to help themselves to seats designated for other people, dignitaries included.

Something similar had played itself out earlier on in the day at a "press conference", where Downs had introduced their 10 new players and the new technical sponsor - but the awards were just priceless.

Trying to interview the winners was a mission, as the fans elbowed you out of the way en route to taking photos with their favourite players.

"We apologise for everything that happened yesterday and we admit that there were a few things that could have been done differently and we will improve," Sundowns media and communications manager Mahlatse Mphahlele said.

Besides all the excitement provided by the side-show, Nyandoro expressed his gratitude for his achievements. He also won this award in 2005-2006 and was last season's most consistent player.
