Four people, including a 10-month-old baby, were killed on the KwaZulu-Natal roads at the weekend.

The baby boy died when the bakkie he was travelling in with his parents hit a tree on the N3 northbound at Wagens' Drift near Escourt in northern KwaZulu-Natal yesterday.

The driver and eight other people who were in the back of the bakkie were seriously injured and taken to the Escourt Provincial Hospital.

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

In another accident on Saturday, three people were killed in a collision between a bakkie and a VW Golf near Empangeni.

Provincial transport department spokesman Zinhle Mngomezulu said the two vehicles collided on the R102 near KwaDlan- gezwa, about 15km from Empangeni.

Although the cause of the accident had not been established, it is alleged that the driver of the Golf was apparently attempting to overtake another vehicle when the collision occurred.

The man and two women who died were all occupants of the Golf.
