Former Orlando Pirates coach Kalambay "Bibey" Mutombo, 46, died in Belgium on Saturday after a long illness, according to his agent Bajio Bajani.
On its website yesterday Pirates conveyed its deepest sympathy to Mutombo's family.
"We ask God to give them (the family) fortitude at this moment of extreme grief and pain," said the team.
Mutombo was appointed Democratic Republic of Congo national team coach after leaving Pirates last year.
He quit his Buccaneer coaching job citing ill health and pressure from supporters. He was replaced by Owen da Gama, who has since quit.
Before coaching Pirates Mutombo had spells with Black Leopards in Limpopo.
He was appointed Pirates technical director when he joined Bucs and later head coach.
He lost favour with Pirates supporters after a string of poor results.
At the time he said he feared for his safety after being escorted off the field by police following another poor result.
Supporters were baying for his blood. The team was slapped with a hefty fine after Amabhakabhaka fans threw missiles at him during a game against Lamontville Golden Arrows.
