Downs fans must behave

My congratulations are in order for Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe for acquiring household names for the new season.

My congratulations are in order for Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe for acquiring household names for the new season.

We hope that the 10 players signed by the Brazilians will conquer both the Absa Premiership and the African continent. This has been his major objective. He wants the number one spot, which is fair after the new acquisitions.

But, as much as we envy Motsepe and his star-studded playing personnel, there are disturbing factors that could put the team in a bad light off the pitch - their organisational capacity.

This was the case when he failed to conduct a decent press briefing at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton last week.

The conference room was chock-a-bloc with Sundowns fans blowing their vuvuzelas, accompanied by a symphony of whistles and ululation.

It also made working conditions for journalists unbearable and frustrating as it turned rowdy.

It was also difficult for journalists to talk to the players because every supporter wanted to either hug or talk to these players.

Motsepe undoubtedly is admired by the Brazilians' supporters as much as they admired Zola Mahobe when he was with the club in the late 1980s, but supporters have to know that a press briefing is not where they belong.

Much as they filled the room to the rafters, they have to translate their attendance into bums on seats when the Brazilians play.

The briefing was the unveiling of the 10 players acquired as well as the announcement of their technical sponsors, Nike, with the club's new kit also unveiled.

When Downs played Egyptian side Hars el-Hadouda at Atteridgeville Stadium in a CAF Cup game at the weekend, the stands were empty and the club played before a disappointing crowd.

The same uncontrollable supporters did the same thing at the announcement of the club's Players Awards the same night.
