Staff have accused Zululand district municipality mayor Zanele Magwaza-Msibi, who is also IFP chairman, of nepotism and of chasing away staff.
But the feisty mayor has denied the allegations saying that since election time was approaching "there will be people targeting me".
Municipal manager Johan de Klerk also dismissed allegations of favouritism.
"We only appoint people according to qualifications and performance ... and we only had 20 resignations out of more than 600 people in the last 12 months."
Magwaza-Msibi has earned respect across the political spectrum for good management in her municipality during 10 years in office. - Mhlaba Memela
