Heavily armed bogus policemen yesterday robbed a Vereeniging couple at their house and fled in the couple's motor car.

Police spokesman Captain Shado Mashobane told Sowetan that four gang members were wearing police and metro police uniforms when they attacked the couple, a domestic worker and a gardener.

"The men parked their car at the gate and raised a police siren," he said.

The noise caused the curious owner to go outside the house to investigate. In response the "policemen" then pulled a man they claimed to have arrested out of the car.

"The men then enquired from the house owner if he remembered if the 'suspect' had bought a car from him. The man denied ever having been part to any such a deal."

That was when the 'suspect' asked for drinking water and in response the owner showed him a tap where he could drink from.

"As the 'suspect' went to the tap, the four pulled out their firearms. One of the thugs pistol-whipped the owner on the head before ordering him back into the house," Mashobane said.

Four other men joined the bogus police officers in the house where the owner, his wife, gardener and the domestic worker were ordered to lie down before their hands were tied with ropes and ties.

The gang ordered the ownerto show them where the safe was.

The robbers helped themselves to R18000 in cash, two firearms, ammunition, jewellery and two cameras before fleeing in a Honda Ballade.

The vehicle was recovered in Lenasia, police said.
