The inaugural Butityiki Konki Schools Rugby Challenge has created great interest among pupils and the broader Uitenhage community.
This was the comment of an excited Sumanekile Yamile, tournament organiser, who said rugby at primary and high schools in the township has improved tremendously.
He said since the formation of the league on April 25, the community of Uitenhage has been supporting their respective schools.
"The parents always rush to the playing field or stadium every Wednesday after school hours to cheer their kids on during games.
"As the programme gains momentum more schools are improving as there is now no easy game for each school," said Yamile.
He cited the improved high schools as Thanduxolo, Phapani, Solomon Mahlangu and Sisonke, just to mention a few.
Some of the promising players from Mahlangu have been selected to the Eastern Cape provincial squad that will compete in the South African Games in September.
The programme features the Under-13s, Under-15s and Under-18s.
The tournament is bankrolled by businessman Butityi Konki.
