CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy - Pope Benedict XVI yesterday urged the G8 summit in Japan this week to take courageous measures to help the world's poor, whose plight he says is worsened by financial turbulence on food and energy prices.

The summit starts today on the island of Hokkaido. Benedict was addressing pilgrims at the papal summer residence near Rome.

". many voices have been raised asking [G8 leaders] to to courageously adopt all necessary measures to conquer the plagues of extreme poverty, hunger, disease, and illiteracy, which still strike such a great portion of humanity," the pontiff said. - Sapa-AP
